ROUND-UP: Kilkenny teams swap local action for Leinster challenges

Evergreen were amongst the Kilkenny teams to advance to the next round of the Leinster Junior Cup

Six Kilkenny clubs safely booked passage through to the next round of the LFA Leinster Junior Cup with wins against teams from across the province.

In a bumper weekend of games involving 13 local clubs, Fort Rangers hit a whopping nine goals into the back of the Tombrack United (Wexford) net and defending champions Evergreen had too much for St Ita’s (Dublin).

Evergreen are still on a high after making club history last May, winning their first ever Leinster Junior Cup title with a hard earned 1-0 win over New Oak (Carlow).

FORT RANGERS 9, TOMBRACK UNITED 0 - Fort began the game at a blistering pace and found themselves 4-0 up after just 13 minutes.

The first goal from Paddy Cahill, which came after just over a minute, set the early tone for the locals. On the half hour Emmet Nugent had completed a first half hat-trick from the penalty spot after a foul on brother Eddie. Fort went in 6-0 up at half-time when Paddy Cahill added his second of the game just minutes before the interval.

Just 10 minutes into the second half, Emmet had his fourth and Fort’s seventh of the game. Emmet then turned provider for Paddy just two minutes later for his hat-trick, to make it 8-0 to Fort before Danny Kenny calmly took down a cross and slotted the ball to the net for a whopping ninth goal.

ST ITAS 0, EVERGREEN 3 - A second half brace from David Grincell helped Evergreen on their way to the next round of the competition as the champions beat their North Dublin hosts.

Lee Costello and Mikey Drennan were the providers for both goals in the 48th and 53rd minutes respectively.

CORACH RAMBLERS 3, FREEBOOTERS 5 - Three-time winners of the competition Freebooters played their part in a eight goal thriller away in Wexford.

First half goals from El Harrak and Leon Hayes cancelled out a 21st minute equaliser to give the Kilkenny outfit the lead at half-time. However, it was far from straightforward and they were forced to rally from 3-2 down to qualify for the next round.
Two further goals from El Harrak (85th minute and extra-time) plus Cian Franey very late on in extra-time won the game for a ‘Booters team staring defeat in the face.

SKRYNE TARA 2, CALLAN UTD 3 - Callan United took the spoils away to Meath opposition last weekend, coming out on top in a five goal thriller.

Goals from Conor Brett, Nicholas Roche and an own goal aided the winners the advantage by the 41st minute but despite a fightback from the hosts the Premier Division team held on.
