It was another busy weekend on the soccer front in Kilkenny, with the opening games of this year's McCalmont Cup taking the spotlight. Defending champions Thomastown United got off to a winning start in this year's competition, while there were wins also for Deen Celtic A, Newpark and Stoneyford United. Evergreen A and Lions A were given walkovers.
It was a mixed weekend on the Leinster Under-19 Cup front for Freebooters and Thomastown United. The city side held their nerve to beat Home Farm on penalties, but Thomastown bowed out when they were beaten by Stella Maris Drumcondra.
