Kilkenny & DL .....................5
KILKENNY’S under-12s showed their claws at the weekend, putting five goals past Drogheda in Ardee on Saturday.
Although Drogheda were first to threaten, going close with a dangerous cross which almost resulted in an early goal, once Kilkenny found their rhythm that was as good as it got for the hosts.
It didn’t take Kilkenny long to take the lead. Peter Henebry created the opening when he nicked the ball off the foot of a Drogheda defender and played through Chris Nolan through. The striker made no mistake, sweeping the ball home with an empathetic left foot finish to give the Cats the lead.
Kilkenny looked far more relaxed on the ball and went on to dominate the remainder of the match. Nolan almost getting his second goal, only for the defender to clear the ball off the line before full-back Edward Moylan drilled a loose ball to the net. The second goal was quickly followed by a third. A short corner was taken, giving Dean George possession of the ball. The midfielder cut inside and unleashed a superb lob into the far corner that saw Kilkenny go in with a 3-0 lead at the break.
Kilkenny didn’t let their tempo slip, and set about making the game safe from the early stages of the second half. Chris Nolan had some chances to add to his early goal, but although the woodwork denied him twice the Bridge United player finally got his second and Kilkenny’s fourth midway through the half. There was time also for Edward Moylan to double his tally, the defender sending a stunning strike into the top corner from 35 yards out.
“I’m very pleased with that performance,” said a delighted team coach Kevin O’Neill. “We responded in the right way to what was a tricky assignment coming up here to Drogheda.”
