Division One champions Newpark A made a high-scoring return to the top flight when they opened their Premier Division account with a 5-3 home win against Fort Rangers.
Keen to make a good start Mark Ryan’s side were sent on their way when Alan O’Brien bagged the opener after a quarter of an hour, but they were hauled back thanks to an Emmet Nugent free-kick with 30 minutes on the clock.
With O’Brien making it 2-1, Newpark looked to have made the points safe when John Hayes doubled their lead just minutes into the second half.
However, Fort refused to fold. An Eddie Nugent penalty, followed by Emmet Nugent’s second of the game, stunned the hosts. With 10 minutes to play the game was in the melting pot but Newpark’s strength and a Shane O’Neill double, saw them grab the spoils with a late flourish.
East End United A also won on their return to the Premier Division, beating the Lions 2-0. Paul Murphy scored on the double for United to keep all three points in Bennettsbridge.
Next up for East End is a home game against Freebooters A on Friday evening, followed by Bridge United on Sunday. The Lions entertain Thomastown United A on Sunday.
