THE competition might be almost a year away, but the Kilkenny & District League are already preparing for the 2013 Kennedy Cup.
The new crop of under-14s will be hoping to mirror the success of the 2012 squad, who matched the county’s best ever result in the national competition when they beat Waterford to lift the Kennedy Plate at the University of Limerick in June.
Manager Darren Murray has drawn up a comprehensive plan for his panel over September and October. The team will continue their training schedule on Tuesday next from 5.30 to 7pm at Derdimus. Training will also be held at the same time every Tuesday in October, with Sunday matches against local opposition on October 7 and 21.
Murray has also named his first squad, drawn from the Emerging Talent Programme. A number of the team played on the Kilkenny & District League’s under-13 side which reached the All-Ireland semi-finals last season, bowing out to Cork in a thriller in Thomastown.
Squad - Cole Walker, Jack Foley (Bridge United); Dylan Doyle, Brandon McGinley (Clover United); Niall Brazil, Sam Hickey, Ethan Butler (Evergreen); Ryan Scanlon, Eoin Wall, Sean Ryan, Conor Flynn (Freebooters); Calvin Brophy (Freshford Town); Mitchell Maher (Highview Athletic); Ben Maher, Jordan Molloy, Ryan Poyntz, Ronan Buckley (Ormonde Villa); Edward O’Neill (Paulstown 06); Rory Monks, David Griffin, Daithi Barron, Adrian Mullen, Colm Whelan, Eoin Keneally (Thomastown United).
THE draws have been made for the Henderson Youths and Women’s Shield competitions.
While both begin with first round games this weekend, the Kilkenny & District League have also made draws for the second round of each competition.
Interestingly, both titles are currently in the possession of treble-winning clubs, who also received first round byes! The all-conquering Freebooters will begin the defence of their Youths’ Shield with a home tie against Newpark in the second round. In the women’s competition, Tullaroan will kick off away to Thomastown United in round two.
