The new season opened in incredible goal-scoring fashion as Divisions Two and Three of the Kilkenny & District League kicked-off on Sunday.
St John’s gave new boys Ballacolla a warm welcome to Kilkenny when they beat their hosts 7-1 in Division Three. Jordan Conroy and Clifford Dube grabbed a brace apiece, Jason Butler, Richie Falsey and Martin Boki were also on the scoresheet.
That tally was matched by East End United B, who beat Brookville B 7-1 in Bennettsbridge. There were hat-tricks for Paul Murphy and Stephen Quirke, while Chris Fitzpatrick completed the big win.
Castlewarren Celtic make a winning start to life in the league as they beat the Lions B 2-1. Although the visitors took the lead thanks to a well-taken goal from Brandon Webster, strong pressure saw Celtic level matters through Ciaran Prendergast. Castlewarren grew in confidence in the second half and got their maiden win when Declan Rafter scored from the spot after he was hauled down by Lions netminder Ger Alley. Freshford Town made a winning start to Division Two, coming from behind twice to beat Thomastown United B 4-2. Freshford scorers were Graham O’Flaherty, Stephen O’Mahony, Eoin Vaughan and Michael Burke, while Danny Monks and Eoin Delahunty netted for Thomastown.
River Rangers made the trek to Graignamanagh a worthwhile one as they beat Highview Athletic 3-1. The visitors got off the mark when a James Gleeson cross was diverted in for an own goal. John Cody doubled their lead before Gearoid Murphy made sure of the points.
Brookville’s bad weekend continued when their A team lost 5-3 away to St Anne’s.
