Blues win to go level at top

THE Premier Division title will go right to the wire after Freebooters A joined Evergreen A at the summit.

The Blues drew level with their local rivals when they beat club-mates Freebooters B in the Fair Green derby on Saturday night.

Freebooters A won the corresponding game 3-0 back in September, with goals from William Flood, Dessie Hayes and Eddie Clifford all but making the points safe by the 28th minute. They were just as quick off the mark this time, taking the lead just five minutes after kick-off.

Dessie Hayes grabbed the opener, before a solo run from Damien Raggett doubled the lead within a matter of minutes. Ger Hayes made it 3-0 with a header, but David Rice pulled a goal back to leave Freebooters B still in the game before half-time.

’Booters B continued to press in the second half, and were given a real boost when Eddie Culleton made it 3-2 within minutes of the restart. Sparked into action, Sean Doyle’s side stepped on the gas and hit their club-mates with a flurry of goals.

Dessie Hayes, Michael Falsey and Ger Hayes all got on the scoresheet as the hosts took control of the game. James Holden, who came out from between the posts in the closing stages, did pull a goal back for Freebooters B – who became the first team to put three past Booters A in the League this season – but a final strike from Dessie Hayes ensured the A team finished the scoring.

That final flurry of goals left Blues boss Sean Doyle more than happy with the result.

“We needed to make a good start and did that to take the sting out of the game,” he said.

Busy spell

The result also brought to an end a busy spell of action for the teams at the top of the table. Both Evergreen A and Freebooters A have been involved in a series of midweek matches, the last of which saw them beat Freebooters B (5-0) and East End United A (3-1) respectively, as the League played catch-up to weekends lost to bad weather.

“It was good to get that out of the way,” added Doyle. “Now it’s down to ourselves and Evergreen A. We’ll have a good week’s training ahead of our McCalmont Cup game, then the same again before the Evergreen A game.”

The final game of the Premier Division season will see Evergreen A host Freebooters A at the Kells Road on Sunday, May 22. Before that both sides will be in McCalmont Cup action, with the semi-finals down for decision this week. ’Booters will be first into action when they play Clover United in Derdimus at 12 noon on Sunday. Evergreen will take on East End United A in the second semi-final later that afternoon, which will also be played at the League’s HQ, at 4pm.
