A new leisure amenity area is being considered for Rosbercon.
Following the success of similar sites in communities across county Kilkenny, Director of Services Mary Mulholland said a facility for Rosbercon has been raised with her ‘quite a few times’.
Ms Mulholland was addressing last week’s joint meeting of municipal district councillors from the Callan-Thomastown district and the New Ross district.
Kilkenny County Council are looking at a couple of areas, including the current soccer club location or St Joseph’s Athletic Club, on Raheen Road, Ms Mulholland said.
Kilkenny County Council has grant aided the athletic club in the past and the location is already an amenity area, Ms Mulholland said.
At a meeting with members of New Ross municipal district Ms Mulholland asked if there would be any collaborative opportunity to invest or upgrade the current facilities.
She pointed out that the location in Raheen has long been associated with sporting amenities, from the time of the Albatros Sports Centre.
All-weather pitches have been installed in a few areas around County Kilkenny, Ms Mulholland said, and have worked well.
St Joseph’s AC, which has members from the wider area as far as Glenmore and Tullogher, recently developed an all-weather running and walking track at the Raheen site. It also has public lighting for evening use. It is free to use by the whole community.
The club is currently fundraising for its next phase of development. You can contribute to the fundraiser here: stjosephsac.ie/donate/
