Revealed: Huge funding boost to Kilkenny Greenways

New Inistioge to Woodstock route to be funded, extra allocation for South East Greenway

GREENWAY

Funding has been announced for a greenway route from Inistioge to Woodstock

A brand new cycling and walking route will link one of Kilkenny's favourite visitor attractions with a nearby town and onwards to the South East's greenway network!

Today (Wednesday) funding has just been announced for a greenway route from Woodstock Estate in Inistioge to New Ross, where it will link up with the South East Greenway.

This new route will become part of a connected greenway route that local councillors want to link the area with Thomastown, Graignamanagh and further up the East coast, and south to the South East Greenway and, eventually, the Waterford Greenway.

An allocation of €400,000 for the Inistioge to New Ross project has been announced today as part of €67 million funding  across the country, dedicated to developing walking and cycling facilities that offer safe, sustainable and healthier transportation options to communities.

In total, Kilkenny County Council is to receive €1.7 million from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) for greenway and Active Travel walking and cycling routes, it was revealed today.

This includes €100,000 for greenway engineering support.

Under Active Travel funding two Kilkenny projects have been successful - the Callan bypass N76 will get €1 million and €200,000 is to be allocated to upgrading cycling facilities on the Kilkenny City ring road.

Meanwhile there's more good news for the South East Greenway, a joint Kilkenny-Wexford project that connects Rosbercon with Waterford.

Wexford County Council, which is the lead authority on the project, has been allocated €2.5 million to continue construction of the South East Greenway.

Wexford County Council has also been funded by €100,000 under Active Travel grants for work on O'Hanrahan Bridge, the bridge that links New Ross in Wexford and Rosbercon on the Kilkenny side of the River Barrow.

The funding announcement has been welcomed by local representatives. Leas - Cheann Comhairle Deputy John McGuinness is delighted with the announcement from Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien, regarding the greenways around the county of Kilkenny.

Welcoming this news Deputy Peter 'Chap' Cleere said: "Greenways have been a remarkable success for rural Ireland, serving as valuable outdoor recreational spaces for communities and visitors to enjoy. I welcome today’s funding announcement for greenway projects and look forward to the development of new and extended routes in the years ahead."
