Fianna Fail TD for Carlow-Kilkenny John McGuinness has welcomed an update from the Minister for Transport on the provision of funding for the redevelopment of Waterford Airport.
The progress follows a parliamentary question submitted by Deputy McGuinness to Minister Darragh O'Brien, seeking clarity on the funding and timeframe for the project. The minister responded by saying that the Programme for Government commits to working with all stakeholders to quickly progress Waterford Airport's project to lengthen and widen the runway, building on the previous Government decision of 2019.
"In line with this commitment, and the requirements under the Infrastructure Guidelines, Waterford Airport has been invited to submit a Preliminary Business Case for this development proposal," said Deputy McGuinness. "This was discussed in detail when Minister O’Brien met with Government colleagues, Minister Butler and Minister Cummins and the CEO of Waterford City and County Council on July 2.

"Minister O'Brien assured me that his Department will work with the airport in its development of the business case and any such case will be assessed as a matter of priority when received by his Department."
Deputy McGuinness hailed this step as a 'crucial and concrete move forward'.
"This invitation to submit a Preliminary Business Case is the formal, logical next step in accessing the significant government funding required for this transformative project," he said.
"It moves the discussion from aspiration to action and demonstrates the Government's commitment to delivering on the promise made in 2019 and reiterated in the Programme for Government. The assurance from Minister O'Brien that his Department will provide support in developing the business case and that it will be treated as a priority upon submission is very welcome. It provides a clear and structured pathway for the airport authorities to follow".
"The redevelopment of Waterford Airport is more than just a transport project; it is a critical piece of economic infrastructure for the entire South-East region. Delivering a runway capable of handling larger aircraft will unlock tourism, boost foreign direct investment, improve regional connectivity, and provide a major economic stimulus for Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, and the surrounding counties."
"I will continue to work closely with Minister O'Brien, my government colleagues, and all local stakeholders to ensure this project receives the support it needs and is delivered without delay," concluded Deputy McGuinness.
