Thanksgiving: Mullinavat pays tribute with an evening of celebration for Fr Liam Barron

It was a retirement party of sorts as the people of Mullinavat came out to say thank you to a priest for his many years of dedicated service.

After 27 years ministering in the parish of Mullinavat, Fr Liam Barron marked his transition into ‘semi-retirement’ at a special service and evening of thanksgiving.

Parishioners from Bigwood and Mullinavat gathered in St Beacon’s Church, with many members of Fr Liam’s family and friends present, to pause and pray in thanksgiving for the years of faithful service he has given.

There was a wonderful atmosphere in the church as a beautiful liturgy was prepared and presented in appreciation for the countless lives he has touched through all the sacraments that he has performed, his preaching and his presence. Mullinavat Folk Choir were present, singing some of Fr Liam’s favourite hymns. The choir was conducted by Julieann Cantwell and accompanied by guitarists Bill Haberlin and Gabriel Cunningham and harpist Ruby Calvey.

Following Mass a big crowd enjoyed refreshments and music in the Mullinavat Community Centre. A slideshow including photographs of Fr Liam’s life was on view throughout the evening, portraying various occasions throughout his 55 years of ministry.

Ordained in July 1970, in his early years Fr Liam ministered in various parts of Scotland before he continued on to various parishes throughout the diocese of Ossory. The past 27 years have been served in Mullinavat Parish.

The evening, which was organised by Mullinavat Pastoral Council, was filled with joy, laughter and stories that reflected the deep love and respect so many have for Fr Liam. Thanks went to all the parishioners who volunteered to prepare the hall and to all who served the refreshments during the event, with special thanks going to Elaine Aylward and staff for providing the catering.

Fr Sean O’Connor, PP Ballyhale and pastoral area co-ordinator of the parishes of Aghaviller, Ballyhale and Mullinavat, has been appointed parish priest of Aghaviller and Mullinavat, while continuing his service to the people of Ballyhale and as pastoral area co-ordinator.

Fr Liam will continue to reside as Pastor Emeritus in the parish of Mullinavat and will assist in the pastoral area of Aghaviller, Ballyhale and Mullinavat.
