South Kilkenny Beekeepers Association (SKBKA) recently held their first meeting of the year to celebrate the achievements of members throughout 2025. In Spring 2025, the association welcomed 22 new members to participate in their Beekeeping for Beginners course. Those present on the night received a certificate of completion. In August 2025, South Kilkenny Beekeepers Association held their annual honey show at the Iverk Show, Piltown, Co. Kilkenny. Eleanor Attridge judged the exhibits and gave great tips and information to those participating. This feedback is always welcomed by exhibitors as it sets a high standard for honey produce in South Kilkenny. Congratulations were extended to all prize winners at the show. Bernadette McGrath won gold for Supreme run honey and Peter Walsh won gold for both Supreme Comb honey and most points won at the show. It was acknowledged that the 2025 beekeeping season once again proved to be a challenging year due to very dry ground conditions that resulted in nectar bearing plants such as the blackberry crop not developing as it should. The confirmed arrival of the Asian Hornet in both Cork and Down raised concern amongst beekeepers across the country and poses further challenges for the future. However, it is evident that public interest in bees and beekeeping is increasing and greater public awareness of these types of threats help to keep them at bay. TAP HERE FOR MORE LOCAL NEWS Condolences were offered to the family of John Gantley on his very sad passing. John was a dedicated member of South Kilkenny Beekeepers Association for many years and will be sadly missed.
