Windgap village is in need of its own bottle bank recycling facility, says one local councillor.
Cllr Joe Lyons called for the facility during the recent meeting of Callan Thomastown Municipal District.
Cllr Lyons revealed that on a recent litter pick in the area ‘a huge amount of cans and bottles’ were collected by volunteers.
Locals covered an area from the Callan bypass to Seskin Lane, halfway to Windgap, and from Garryricken to Coolagh.“Windgap badly needs a recycling facility,” Cllr Lyons said.
The Callan-based councillor also asked for better signage for the bottle bank in the town. The 24-hour/seven-day facility is at the back of the County Council offices in Callan, but not everybody knows its location, he said. “New people in town don’t know it exists.”
Electrical Collection
On the topic of recycling, Cllr Peter Cleere asked if the electrical recycling collections would be back this year, after a lockdown hiatus. He said it is a ‘hugely valuable initiative’.
Director of Services, Mary Mulholland, offered to invite Kilkenny County Council’s Environmental Awareness Officer to speak to the council, given the councillors’ queries.
They could discuss possible locations for collections and if this year’s collections should be longer to take into account the gap since the last collection.
Cllr Cleere proposed the invitation be issued and Cllr Lyons thanked Ms Mulholland for facilitating this.
