Local objections to closure of bridge on Kilkenny Wexford border

Repair works on a bridge linking counties Kilkenny and Wexford, described by Kilkenny County Council as “to assure long term safety”, have raised the ire of some local people.
Part of the planned project would see Ferrymountgarret Bridge completely closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic during the works.
However, in a submission to Kilkenny County Council, one representative of the local community raised what they see as “serious concerns” relating to the project.
Ferrymountgarrett Bridge is a six-span structure carrying the R700 road over the River Barrow.
While the original construction is older, the present bridge dates from the 1930s.
According to Kilkenny County Council increased traffic volumes and sizes over the past 10 to 15 years, since previous strengthening works were carried out, have resulted in the accelerated deterioration of the predominantly reinforced concrete structure.
Following detailed inspections, surveys, investigations by the council it is now proposed to carry out the works this summer.
This will involve the closure of the bridge for 10 to 12 weeks from June 24 to August 28.
However, resident of The Rower, a community on the Kilkenny side of the bridge, David Maher, has appealed to Kilkenny County Council to urgently reconsider the matter.
Describing the bridge as a “critical regional transport link,” Mr Maher said the complete closure of the bridge “will have severe consequences for local communities, businesses, carers, disabled people, older persons, workers, farmers, school transport, emergency access routes, and the wider regional economy.
“The impact of this closure extends far beyond inconvenience,” he adds in his submission to Kilkenny County Council.
“While I fully accept that essential safety and structural works may be required on the bridge, I have very serious concerns regarding both the proposed closure itself.”
Mr Maher argued that “the current timeframe for submissions is also wholly inadequate given the scale and impact of the proposal” and highlighted issues such as the “substantial” diversion routes, the “flawed” public consultation process.
Necessary
In reply, Kilkenny County Council have stated: “This is a significant period but fully necessary to carry out the works as quickly as possible. A fully enclosed containment system as shown below is required to prevent contamination of the river.
“The completion of works such as deck waterproofing, concrete reinforcement, drainage and surfacing will be achieved more quickly under a full closure avoiding prolonged disruption.
“The road closure now advertised is to ensure that works are done during maximum daylight hours, during school holiday period for schools to minimise disruption and maximise working hours on the project.”
