Cats still in the race as League action heats up

GETTING SHIRTY: Eoin Cody (Kilkenny) leaves the pitch with a torn shirt after his side’s victory in the Allianz hurling league Division One match against Dublin at UPMC Nowlan Park.

The long weekend could witness a cracker as Kilkenny and Waterford collide on what promises to be a super Sunday.

A place in the knockout stages of the League is at stake as the Cats entertain Davy Fitzgerald’s Deise (throw-in 1.45pm).

While games between the sides are always entertaining, this Patrick’s Weekend affair could have a little more spice. Waterford saw their hopes suffer a big dent when they went under to Tipperary in Thurles on Saturday night.

That result - a 4-23 to 0-25 win for the Premier County - allowed Kilkenny to overtake their rivals in the league standings when beating Dublin by 2-25 to 1-17 on Sunday.

Liam Cahill’s Tipp are top with eight points, with Derek Lyng’s Kilkenny second on six and Waterford third on five - with the top two advancing, a win or draw on Sunday will be enough to earn the Cats their place in the knockout stages.

Kilkenny were impressive in their dismantling of Dublin at the weekend, with manager Lyng full of praise for his side.

“We want to try and win our next game to get into the knockout stages and go as far as we can,” he said in the aftermath of Sunday’s win over the Dubs. “That’s our ambition.

“We’ve a number of players that are hopefully coming back over the next few weeks so the additional games would be welcome and we are looking forward to what lies ahead now.

“We would take a league semi-final right now, but we’ve a big test with Waterford next week first,” the manager added. “It’s an ideal game for us next week and we are looking forward to it.”

Kilkenny were sharp in attack, with two second half goals from Eoin Cody and a sterling points-scoring performance from Billy Drennan helping to deliver the right result.

Sunday’s game will be the second act of a busy day in the Park - fresh from leading St Kieran’s College to the All-Ireland final on St Patrick’s Day, Brian Dowling will bring the county’s senior camogie side into action as they entertain Cork in their league clash.

Sunday’s game, a repeat of last year’s All-Ireland final, will start at 11.30am.
