Lee Delaney has been named in the Republic of Ireland amateur side for the international friendly against the Basque Region
Kilkenny's Lee Delaney has been called up for the Republic of Ireland Amateur side's international friendly against the Basque Region.
The Evergreen defender has been named in Gerry Davis's 20-man squad for the game, which will be used as preparation for this summer’s Regions Cup, which will be held in Galicia, Spain in June - there they will face Galicia (hosts), Bavaria (Germany), Zenica-Doboj (Bosnia and Herzegovina).
This is a first call-up to the Amateur side for Delaney. He has represented Ireland in the past, lining out with the Defence Forces side at the CISM World Military Games in Wuhan, China.
The Basque friendly will be held at Estadio de Lasesarre in Barakaldo on Tuesday. Kick-off is 6.30pm Irish time.
"This game will be great preparation for the upcoming Regions Cup," said Davis. "We’ll be using Athletic Bilbao’s training centre and the Basque Region, who have been a great help in setting up the fixture, will be an ideal opposition ahead of the tournament where we face Galicia in the first game.
"We’ve had great support from the FAI to get the training camp and we’re really looking forward to the opportunity," he added. "It is a chance for the players to shine and put themselves in the shop window for the final tournament squad. There are some players not in this squad who will be in contention and we’ll have another camp before the final squad is announced but we’re really looking forward to the game."
