There was no Hallowe’en scare for Tullogher-Rosbercon as they cruised into the next round of the Leinster junior hurling championship with a high-scoring win on Saturday.
The Kilkenny champs were too hot for their Wicklow opponents, St Patrick’s, as they roared to a big win at the SETU Carlow campus.
Danny Glennon was the man of the moment, helping himself to three goals as they easily dismissed the challenge of the Wicklow intermediate outfit.
Tullogher were quick to stamp their authority on the game, opening with three quick points from Walter Walsh, Cian O’Donoghue and Conor Hennessy. Quick to close down the St Patrick’s puck-out they rubber-stamped their dominance when Danny Glennon pounced for their first goal on 13 minutes, reacting quickest to turn a loose sliotar home after a Walsh shot cannoned back off the crossbar. Walsh added a second goal two minutes later; when O’Donoghue bagged the third in the 20th minute the writing was on the wall for St Patrick’s.
Glennon would grab his side’s fourth goal for Tullogher, who were driven on by fine displays from Pat Hartley and midfield duo Jamie Lyng and Colman O’Sullivan. Andy O’Brien stemmed the one-way traffic when he rattled the net for St Patrick’s in the 30th minute, but they were already staring defeat in the face as they trailed by 18 points at the break (4-13 to 1-4).
Tullogher rang the changes in the second half, using it to give more players game time, but they never relinquished their grip on the game. Glennon completed his hat-trick when he scored his third goal three minutes into the new half, while sharpshooter Cian O’Donoghue kept things ticking over in the points department. Marty Murphy, who impressed throughout, completed a good afternoon’s work with the sixth goal eight minutes from time.
Tullogher-Rosbercon will now play Laois club Colt-Shanhoe in the provincial quarter-finals on November 11.
