Evergreen celebrate another league title success
Evergreen are once again Junior St Canice’s Credit Union Premier Division champions after they wrapped up another local title last week.
It was the city club’s seventh successive premier divisional crown and in truth it was never really in doubt as they completed the season unbeaten.
Not since Thomastown United back in 2015 has a club outside of the Kells Road brought home the silverware but credit must go to Evergreen who have been hugely consistent these past few seasons.
Along with city rivals Freebooters, the season looked primed to end with a title decider between the two but any slip-up from ’Booters was going to prove fatal after Evergreen won all of their league games previously including a 2-1 success against their near neighbours last October.
The latest league success was sealed when Evergreen scored five past Callan United.
David Grincell and Mikey Drennan both got two goals before Jamie Owens wrapped another three points up with the fifth and final goal of the game late on.
That sealed the title as, 24 hours earlier, Freebooters dropped points in their penultimate league game against Thomastown, where a late United equaliser from Adam Power meant both sides had to settle for a 1-1 draw on the Fair Green.
It’s been a double celebration for Evergreen in recent weeks as their second team also claimed title honours in the Junior KCLR Scoreline.ie Division One League.
There was better luck for the Freebooters club in the Junior Division Two Emerald Tiles League as their B side finished top of the newly split league ahead of the likes of Newpark, East End United and Stoneyford United.
Like Evergreen in the top tier, Freebooters B ended the league season unbeaten with 16 wins from the 18 games played.
Normally the domestic season would finish with the McCalmont Cup final which was played last Saturday but with a lot of Divisional Cups yet to be decided, the local soccer fare will go into June.
