Ellen Molloy will be plying her trade across the water for the upcoming season after she sealed a switch to FA Women’s Championship side Sheffield United.
The 20 year-old has played her football at Wexford FC for the last five seasons which was headlined by winning the Young Player of the Year in her debut season before then adding an FAI Cup in 2021 as well as being named on the Women’s National League Team of the Year in both 2021 and 2022.
The Thomastown United underage player leaves the South-East having played 90 games and scoring 47 goals which is no mean feat for a midfielder.
Molloy made her international debut at just 16 and while she has six caps to her name for the Republic of Ireland, a cruciate ligament injury in 2022 ruled her out of contention for the following year's World Cup and she's not been involved at national level since.
This move to full-time football will give Molloy the chance to showcase her talents on an even bigger stage and she certainly has time on her side as she looks to take the professional game by storm.
Upon leaving Ferrycarrig Park, Wexford FC Women Chairperson Alan Browne said:
“Ellen first joined us in the summer 2019. Since that time, she has been a fantastic player and role model for the club both when she represented the club at National League and international level. She has been an inspiration to us all. She has shown huge dedication and commitment to get herself ready for the next challenge. We are very excited for Ellen with this new opportunity and we wish Ellen the very best with Sheffield United.”
Molloy was unveiled at Bramall Lane earlier this afternoon and she had a brief statement upon making the move official.
"I'm delighted, I can't really believe it to be honest. I love the city, I got a really good feel for the club and everyone involved so I'm really excited to get started."
