A Robbie Walsh strike was worth its weight in goal-d as Danesfort roared to the intermediate hurling league shield spoils.

Walsh’s seventh minute finish, the only goal of the game, helped them build a lead that was too big for Tullogher to claw back at UPMC Nowlan Park on Saturday.

Full-forward Robbie Walsh’s seventh minute point attempt seemed to be heading over the City End crossbar when it dropped short. Tullogher goalkeeper Eoin Kennedy got something on the sliotar, but couldn’t prevent it from sneaking inside his left hand post and ending up in the net (1-3 to 0-3).

The winners kicked on, and with Walsh and Paddy Hickey scoring a brace apiece Danesfort jumped into a seven-point lead by the end of the first quarter. An injury-hit Tullogher were forced to bring a man out of their full-forward line in an effort to force more ball in, but found the ’Fort defence a tough nut to crack.

Leading 1-10 to 0-9 at half-time Danesfort kept things going up top. Points from Paddy Hickey, Richie Hogan and Ben Whitty (free) were answered by Tullogher scores from Danny Glennon and Simon Kennedy, but a another run of points from the likes of Padraic Mullen (2), Whitty (free) and Hogan pushed the lead out to nine by the 38th minute (1-17 to 0-11).

Tullogher’s cause wasn’t helped when they lost Tarek O’Connor to a red card with 45 minutes. Danesfort used the space to create point-scoring opportunities with Paddy Hickey (2), Mullen and Paul Murphy among the scorers as they eased their way to the spoils.
