Fancy a new challenge for 2025? Kilkenny triathlon club is calling!

Kilkenny Triathlon Club has gone from strength to strength in recent years and boasts a friendly and inclusive atmosphere.

With the new year bringing new challenges, Kilkenny Triathlon Club will hope to introduce people to another sporting challenge when they hold their Open Night and launch the couch2Duathlon programme in the coming days.

Kilkenny Triathlon Club has gone from strength to strength over the last few years. The club is very proud of their friendly, inclusive and welcoming atmosphere. Always eager to spread the word about the exciting world of triathlon, the club loves to see new members joining in.

The Open Night, which will be held on January 22, provides a great opportunity to see what the club can offer individuals on their quest for greater fitness, a challenge, to make new friends or just to have a lot of fun!

Couch2Duathlon

Couch2Duathlon is a training programme which is suitable for people of all levels of fitness, from beginner to athlete.
This is a great starting point for people who have always wanted to race duathlon or even triathlon.

A duathlon combines running and cycling, offering an exciting and rewarding way to challenge yourself.

The Kilkenny Duathlon will be held on April 6. Based in the Castle Park, the event will start at 11am with a 3km run around the grounds of the park.

This will be followed by a 20km cycle out the Waterford Road, turning left in Danesfort and taking the road to Bennettsbridge before following the main road from Bennettsbridge back to Kilkenny Castle. After dismounting, participants will finish the duathlon with a second 3km run.

To get people ready for their first duathlon, the couch2Duathlon is an eight-week programme tailored to build confidence, enhance fitness and teach all the skills needed to tackle a duathlon all while connecting with a supportive community.

The training programme includes running and training coaching with instruction from club coaches.

RUNNING COACHING

Join the Wednesday night track sessions at the Watershed. The sessions are led by James Ledingham, an experienced athlete with qualifications in sports performance and physical education.

These sessions include mobility exercises and customised running interval training designed to suit all abilities.
Cycling coaching

Participate in the club’s brick (bike and running sessions), which are led by Ivan McMahon, a Triathlon Ireland-certified coach.

These sessions start in a safe, closed industrial complex before moving to the road.

The sessions begin with a warm-up and mobility exercises followed by run-bike-run drills that gradually increase to the full duathlon distance. Here people will also learn valuable tips for transitions between cycling and running and get hands-on experience with the cycling equipment in a supportive, controlled environment.

WHY CHOOSE DUATHLON?

Duathlon is an ideal entry point to multisport events, requiring only running and cycling - there is no swimming.
These two activities complement each other perfectly. Running enhances cardiovascular fitness, while cycling builds strength and endurance
