Peter Lynch (Kilkenny City Harriers) broke the 31-year-old record in Washington on Sunday
A national running record which had stood for 31 years has been broken by a Kilkenny athlete.
Peter Lynch ran his way into the Irish record books when he smashed John Treacy's best time in Washington on Sunday.
The Kilkenny City Harriers athlete, who represented Ireland at the European Championships in Rome last year, clocked a time of 45:59 at the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile race in the States.
The run saw Lynch eclipse Treacy's 46:25, a record which the Waterford Olympian set in October 1993.
Lynch, running for the Puma Elite Running team, completed the course in an average of 4:36 per mile. The popular road race is used by athletes as a training event for the Boston Marathon
