Pictures- Kilkenny stars show great results at Leinster Championship

Kilkenny City Harriers (KCH), Thomastown and Castlecomer were all represented in Carlow

Jacob Briers (KCH) and Joey Nolan (Nuenna) were first and third respectively in the boys’ under-13 pentathlon

The Leinster Outdoor Track and Field season started at the weekend with the track at SETU Carlow hosting the Leinster Uneven and Even Age Relays on Saturday and the Combined Events on Sunday.

Over 30 relay teams, ranging from under-nine up to under-19, represented the county in Carlow with Kilkenny City Harriers (KCH), Thomastown and Castlecomer sending teams on the day. Their efforts were rewarded, as they took home a total of three gold, five silver and four bronze medals between all the teams, while others just missed out on medals with fourth place finishes.

For the younger age groups there would be heats and then finals should they qualify - for those of an older age, it was straight into finals.

The relay days are always a fun day out, and a great opportunity especially for the younger athletes to compete with their friends. Well done to all who competed in the heats, who made it to the finals, and to those who medalled and now qualify for the All-Ireland relay finals.

Leinster Combined

Sunday saw many of the club athletes back in action at the Leinster Combined Events in the SETU Carlow. There were two new events for the younger juveniles with under-11 and under-12 boys and girls now participating in the Quadrathlon, where they competed in 60m, long jump, shot put and 600m.

From under-13 to under-18, seniors and masters age categories, the athletes compete in the Pentathlon with five events throughout the day. The introduction of the multi-events for the younger juveniles is great to see. No doubt Kate O’Connor’s great achievements so far this year has gained huge interest, as seen in the large field of athletes in the younger age groups.

In total there were three gold, five silver and three bronze medals won on the day by athletes from Nuenna, Thomastown, Kilkenny City Harriers and Gowran. Well done to all who competed on the day in preparation for the Leinster Pairs and under-12-13 Leinsters next week.
