A strong second half gave Tullogher Rosbercon a come from behind success against Carrickshock in Ballyhale on Sunday afternoon.
Goals in each half from Andrew Murphy and Danny Glennon gave the 2023 All-Ireland junior champions the edge as they battled to a deserved victory despite being without the injured Walter Walsh.
Carrickshock had led at the interval through goals via Adam Franks and Eoghan O’Neill but they only scored six second half points and that put paid to their challenge ultimately.
Carrickshock made a dream start to the game and had 1-1 on the board within the opening five minutes.
Adam Franks gave the ‘Shock the advantage initially with a pointed free before they then increased their tally with Franks on the board again as he fired a shot to the net after being brilliantly set up by John Power near the sideline.
Tullogher then worked their way into the game through points from Conor Hennessy and Marty Murphy to leave an early scoreline of 1-1 to 0-2.
Andrew Murphy and Danny Glennon continued the Tullogher surge but further points for Carrickshock from Adam Franks and Jake O’Dwyer maintained the advantage for the Shane Lanigan managed side.
Tullogher were right back in the game in the 21st minute as Danny Glennon buried a shot to the net on the back of being set clear by Marty Murphy.
The goal started some Tullogher momentum with Andrew Murphy, Marty Murphy and Colman O’Sullivan following up with points that gave them a 1-8 to 1-5 advantage approaching the end of the half.
In a cracking half of hurling, there was still some twists and turns and after John Power landed two points from range for Carrickshock, the former Kilkenny star was also to the fore as he set up Eoghan O’Neill for a goal that gave his team a narrow lead at the break by the minimum.
It was still nip and tuck in the early minutes of the second half and when Carrickshock scored three on the bounce between the 43rd and 47th minutes from the hurls of Jake O’Dwyer and Eoghan O’Neill, it looked like they might have enough in the tank to get over the line.
The leaders ran out of gas in the final quarter however with just two Adam Frank frees being their scant tally in the remainder of the game.
As a result Tullogher threw everything at their opponents and with Andrew Murphy, Colman O’Sullivan and Marty Murphy scoring in succession, they worked their way in front on the scoreboard.
Andrew Murphy rounded off a fine second half display with a goal in the dying minutes as Tullogher eventually ran out seven point winners on a 2-21 to 2-14 scoreline.
The game proved to be a brilliant advert for Kilkenny intermediate hurling and Tullogher showcased that they have the ability to be big contenders in the next few weeks.
