Kilkenny intermediate champions Danesfort will look to add another rung of silverware when they take on Ratoath in the Leinster Final in Navan this Sunday afternoon (1.30pm).

Danesfort will travel to the Royal County as big favourites but, as the saying goes, once bitten and twice shy; that will definitely apply to this fixture with the Kilkenny side’s defeat to Trim in UPMC Nowlan Park three years ago still fresh in their minds.

Ratoath have the advantage of being senior winners in Meath and after winning the last two championship titles in the county, they will be hopeful of a big showing in what will be the last game in Navan before it is redeveloped in the new year.

The home side fell to Wicklow’s Bray Emmets at the first hurdle in the Leinster campaign last year but they’ve got more used to their surroundings with wins over Carnew Emmets (Wicklow) and Lusmagh (Offaly) earlier this term.

Podge O’Hanrahan is the main score-getter in attack while they also have big influencers in the likes of Cian Rogers and former Meath senior footballer Bryan McMahon, so Adrian Burke’s Danesfort outfit will have to be on their game.

Whatever about the opposition, the ’Fort can take solace that they’ve had a very successful season to date which was headlined by their surprising win over James Stephens in the Intermediate County Final in October.

Since then they have accounted for both Fethard St Mogues (Wexford) and Commercials (Dublin) in recent weeks, with the introduction of teenager and St Kieran’s College student Fionn Mahony proving to be a huge hit.

The inside forward has scored a combined 2-7 from play over the two games to date and added to the ongoing threat of Anthony Ireland Wall and Sam Hayes in attack, it has given the Kilkenny champions an extra dimension up top.

Danesfort will also have extra motivation with the Leinster cup named after club stalwart Tommy Murphy, who also served as county chairman, so a win on Sunday would have even more relevance than usual.
