Kilkenny Stars shine with impressive win over Dublin Raiders

The Clunetech Kilkenny Stars had a good win at home to the Dublin Raiders at the weekend.

Clunetech Kilkenny Stars continued a firm start to life in the National League with a 65-62 win over fellow newcomers Dublin Raiders to get their fifth victory in seven games.

It was an edgy finish to a game that had multiple shifts of momentum, but still ended with a three-point victory for the Stars.

At times the home team were sublime in offence and relentless in defence. Steph Davis put in a huge performance, hitting 23 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Aoibhin Dunphy was consistent throughout coming up with 14 points while Lena Zydek hit 10 and Ava Coogan hit two huge three-pointers in the final quarter to help secure the win.

The Stars got out to a great start and rushed into a 19-9 lead, pushing it out to 41-27 at the half. Aimee O’Reilly and Gemma Lawlor were very solid throughout the half.

At the start of the third quarter the Stars flew out of the blocks with Faye Scanlon and Clodagh O’Neill contributing but just as the scores dried up the Raiders went on a run, reducing the lead to just six points going into the final quarter.

In the last quarter the Stars remained very strong but the Raiders made some huge shots to keep the game very close.

Dominique Mpesa had 22 for Raiders, but missed a game-tying attempt at the end of the game, her shot on the buzzer just rimming out.

This was another huge win for the Stars Ladies who were really up against it, with a few players not available. It was a testament to the squad that, when called upon, they can dig deep and grind out results like this one. Thanks went to the supporters who made lots of noise to help the team get over the line.

The Stars will take to the road for their next few games. They are away to Limerick Celtics on Saturday before heading west to play the Galway Mystics on Sunday, December 28.
