J.J. Delaney, considered by most experts to be one of the greatest defenders to have played the game of hurling, will host a Bord Gáis Energy Legends Tour of Croke Park on Saturday.
The tour, which starts as 12 noon, will be held little over 24 hours ahead of Kilkenny’s All-Ireland semi-final clash with Waterford. Fans can hear J.J. look back on his illustrious inter-county career and also get his views on the big game.
J.J.’s senior career with Kilkenny spanned thirteen years from his debut season in 2001. He was an integral part of what many regard as the greatest team of all-time winning almost every honour in the game. His impressive list of achievements includes; nine senior All-Ireland medals, eleven Leinster senior championship wins, nine National League titles and six Walsh Cups.
On an individual basis J.J. is also highly decorated. He picked up seven All-Star awards over the course of his playing days with the Kilkenny seniors as well as being named both the All-Star Hurler of the Year and Texaco Hurler of the Year in 2003. He was chosen as one of the 125 greatest hurlers of all-time in a 2009 poll, the same year in which he was picked on the best Leinster team of the previous 25 years.
The Fenians clubman also enjoyed success at under-age level with his county. He’s the holder of a Leinster and All-Ireland medal at the U21 grade and a provincial medal at minor.
He also enjoyed inter-provincial success with Leinster, winning Railway Cup medals in 2002 and 2009, while he also won two Fitzgibbon Cups with Waterford Institute of Technology in 2003 and 2004.
J.J. is now a well-known voice and face among GAA fans through his work with Sky Sports.
“Croke Park is where I always wanted to play as a child and to have fulfilled that dream was a massive achievement for me,” J.J. said ahead of the Legends Tour. I was fortunate to play with great players on great teams and to enjoy success was the icing on the cake. I felt very privileged any time I pulled on the Kilkenny jersey and to have been able to do it at senior level over such a long period of time is something of which I’m very proud. It will be great to go back to Croke Park and have a chance to reflect on some of my greatest memories on Saturday.”
