The first of the inter-club competitions ended in disappointment as the Mount Juliet GC men’s Leinster foursomes team lost to Castlecomer GC.

With the odd match in five at home it was hoped that the locals could progress, but ’Comer advanced 3-2. With the tie standing at 2-2 it all came down to the final match at Mount Juliet where Pat Garvey and Ronan Murphy succumbed on the 18th green in near darkness after a long battle.

The team which was managed by Ted Hoyne also featured Padraic O’Connor & Pat Doyle, Arthur Hickey & Liam Naddy, John McNena & Jack O’Byrne and Michael Hoyne & Frank Smyth.

The Ladies Minor Cup team won their match against Rosslare GC by 3½ to 1½. The locals won the first three matches played, one match was lost at the same time, with the final match called in. The team, managed by Sally Gleeson, featured Mary Molloy, Myra Phelan, Therese Maher, Alison Hoyne and Niamh Strudwick.   

LADIES - The ladies had their first official outing of 2017 on Wednesday last when a brave group played in cold, blustery conditions to launch their series of sociable get-togethers.

Kathleen Brett won the competition, which was played over a shortened course. With the weather expected to improve it is hoped this weekly event will grow in popularity.

FOURBALL - The member/guest fourball betterball was won by the husband and wife pairing of Jon and Brenda O’Sullivan with 44pts. They had a shot to spare from Tommy Malone and Tim Howes, with John Connolly and Paul Madigan a further shot behind in third.

The winners scored 21pts for their first nine holes and improved on the last nine holes with a further 23pts, helped by Jon’s birdie two on the short 11th.

FOUR - Sunday’s four-person member/guest team event was won by John Joe O’Farrell’s team. Their score of 91pts saw them pip the Sean Keane-led team by two points.

The Gowran Park GC Junior Boys’ team had a great win over Castlecomer GC in the opening round of the Fred Daly Trophy.

The locals beat ’Comer 4-0, with the fifth match called in on the 13th. The team of Ciaran Whelan, Cian Russell, Conor Cleere, Harry Foley and Jamie Holden now await the winner of the Kilkenny v Carlow clash in the next round.

NINE - The first weekly nine-hole competition of the season will be held today (Wednesday). A big turnout is expected.

SINGLES - The Thursday open singles competition reverts to a weekly competition from today (Thursday) with a timesheet in place. An open singles qualifier will be held every Thursday until August 31, with the top three plus equals advancing to the final on September 1. First prize is a pair of All-Ireland hurling final tickets plus overnight stay for two in Citywest Hotel. Timesheets are available from 056-7726699.

EASTER - An open fourball competition will be held on Easter Saturday and Sunday. An open three-person team event will follow on Easter Monday. Entry fee is €20 for visitors, €5 for members. Timesheets available from the golf office.

A fine score of 39pts saw Gerry Mealy win the men’s 18-hole open singles, the first competition off the white markers, at Castlecomer GC.

Gerry had a narrow win, pipping Anthony Holohan by one point.

SENIORS - Twenty-eight golfers turned out for the senior classic on Wednesday. The competition was played in mainly dry conditions with a gentle South to South-Easterly breeze.

COURSE - Great work has continued across the course. Green-keeper Colin Hughes pole forked the greens, with Matt Dooley, James Daly and course manager Michael Doheny helping to sand same afterwards. The clubhouse is also home to a number of freshly-hung pictures in the entrance area. Work was carried out by Lady Captain Betty Owens and her nephew, Martin Dwyer. Martin’s father Michael was club captain in 1959.

RETIRED - Best wishes went to green-keeper and former captain in 2008, Paddy Curry, on his retirement.

BEREAVED - Sympathy went to seniors’ golfer Tom Staunton and family, who have been bereaved by the death of his sister Anna.

GARDENING - The club will holding a gardening night on April 27. Teresa Walsh from Countrylife will discuss the dos and don’ts of gardening. All are welcome.

LOTTO - There was no winner of the golf club lotto jackpot. Numbers drawn were 15, 23, 24 and 27. The jackpot is now €16,400.


The club doubles qualifier will be the big competition at Mountain View GC this weekend.

The format is a fourball better ball, with the winners representing the club in this year’s Holmpatrick Cup.

SPRING - After three rounds Michael Hoyne is the Group One leader of the Spring League. Michael has scored 220pts, with John Shaw second on 210pts. Frank Costelloe and Philip Begley are joint third on 190pts each.

In Group Two John Coffey leads the way with 360pts. Seamus O’Brien is second with 300pts, while John Coleman is third on 290pts.

POT - The next Split The Pot draw is on Sunday. Single entry is €2.

TEAM - An open team event will be held on Easter Sunday.

Good weather favoured the running of the Carpey Gallery 18-holes singles stableford at New Ross GC.

A large field, which included ladies and visitors, tackled the course. With Summer rules now in operation and placing gone, scores were down somewhat on recent events.

P.J. McGrath (18) defied the odds and brought in a winning score of 38pts, beating Seamus Phelan (13) by one point. A better back nine saw Joe Doyle (9) finish third, also with 37pts, while Michael Ryan (+2) scored 34pts to win the gross prize. Category winners were Michael P. Cullen (9), 35pts; John Browne (13), 36pts; David Byrne (20), 36pts.

FOURBALL - The first Tuesday evening fourball got away to a wet start last Tuesday. Sponsored by Mullinavat GAA club and played over nine holes, the winners were Robert O’Dwyer (20) and Martin Furlong (22) with 23pts. Tommy Liston (7) and Tommy Tyler (16) scored 21pts to secure second prize while the mixed pair of Joe Kelly (11) and Kay Bolger (14) were third with 20pts.

LADIES - Results, Blossoms Ladies Boutique competition, March 29: 1 Teresa Foley (19), 40pts; 2 Pat Purcell (18), 33pts; 3 Margaret Furlong ADM (16), 33pts.

The ladies will hold a prize-giving night on Wednesday, April 12.

Ladies are reminded that online booking now opens at 9pm. The option of three days’ grace no longer applies. There is no limit to the Saturdays or Sundays ladies wish to play for the following weekly competition.

The ladies competition today (Wednesday) will be an 18-hole stableford. The competition, which features a senior prize, is sponsored by Sweeney’s Garden Centre.

EASTER - The club will hold an open Easter Classic from Good Friday to Easter Monday.

The club will hold an Kids Easter Camp from April 18 to 20. The camp costs €15 for two hours of daily golf tuition. Further information is available from 051-421433.

INTER-CLUB - The Intermediate team made a winning start to their season when they beat Tramore GC in Waterford Castle on Saturday.

SENIORS - Bright sunshine greeted the seniors when they held their first outing of the season at Gowran Park GC. On tricky greens with many undulations scoring was tough, with many tales of putts overshooting the hole and the return too often failing to find the hole.

Tony Harford (13), John Joe Cullen (18), Aidan O’Connor (19) and Kenny Irwin (21) took the top prize with a score of 90pts. Steve Travis (17), Luke Power (19), John Joe Murray (19) and Les Jastrebski (25) were second with 86pts while John Browne (13), Willie Naddy (19), Frank Boyle (20) and Tony Sexton (24) were third with 84pts.

John Kennedy (16), P.J. McGrath (16), Kevin Treacy (19) and Martin Burke (25) were fourth with 82pts. The team of Tommy Ryan (15), Hughie O’Connor (18), Tony Redmond (18) and Jim Kehoe (24) were fifth with 81pts while Denis Kirwan (11), John Murphy (17), Brian Dolan (22) and Jamesie Murphy (23) won the Titleist balls for finishing sixth with 80pts.

Conditions weren’t as good when the seniors held their weekly outing at Tinneranny. With the weather hampering conditions the seniors opted to only play 14 holes.

Despite the conditions some good scores were recorded. The three-person team of Andy Lawlor (11), Robert O’Dwyer (20) and Sean O hUginn (20) were first with a score of 72pts (67+5). John Kennedy (16), Peter Goggin (17), Willie Naddy (19) and Jamesie Murphy (23) were second on 71pts while Patsy Farrell (15), Martin Forristal (19), Aidan O’Connor (19) and Martin Hartley (22) were third with 70pts. Nearest the pin prize (ninth hole) went to Willie Naddy.

Names are now being taken for the seniors outing to Bunclody on Tuesday, April 18. Entry fee of €25 must be paid by April 13. Contact Jamesie Murphy, tel 085-1846172.


The Tuesday open singles competition is now up and running at Rathdowney GC.

Sponsored by Ossie Bennett Husqvarna, entry fee is €12 for visitors, €7 for members.

Denis O’Neill and his wife, Lady Captain Janette, organised a successful and entertaining table quiz at Borris GC on Friday.

The quiz was won by Sean Kerr, Hamish Beaton, John Foley and Sean Hanafin.
