Kilkenny golf: Castlecomer getting into swing for Open Week

The 40th offering of Castlecomer Open Week, the annual festival of golf, swings into action at Castlecomer GC this month.
Events begin on Saturday, July 28 with a three-person classic and continue until the August Bank Holiday Weekend.
The diary for Open Week is: Three-person classic, July 28; Men’s 18-hole singles stableford, July 29; Ladies three-person champagne scramble and junior day 18-hole singles stableford, July 30; two-person team event, July 31; Seniors Day 18-hole singles stableford, August 1; ladies and gents nine-hole singles, August 2; Four-person 18-hole classic, August 3 & 4; Ladies 18-hole stableford and men’s 18-hole stroke, August 5; three-person champagne scramble, August 6.
The presentation of prizes and social night will be held on Sunday, August 5 at 9pm. This golf festival in Castlecomer has a rich tradition and is sure to attract golfers from near and far.
DUGGAN CUP: The Duggan Cup team had a great 3- 0 win against Coolattin GC in their quarter-final match on Sunday. Castlecomer won the 3 matches at home and were up in one and level in the second away game when called in. Home team: Michael Daly & Ken Hovenden, Marty O’Shea & Paul Rice and Michael Dermody & Gerry Mealy. Away: Martin Brennan (manager) & Pat Comerford, and Michael Minogue & Andy Cleere.
SENIORS: The seniors will compete for the Michael Doyle Memorial Trophy today (Wednesday).
Results, seniors classic, July 11: 1 Murty Coonan (11), Matt Pollack (26), Christy McGrath (25), 79pts; 2 Tom O’Neill (7), Noel Brennan (20), Tony Cooper (27), 76pts; 3 Donal Walsh (15), Sean Scanlon (17), Tony Carr (20), Tom Slevin (28), 74pts.
TGIF: Helen Murphy, Honoria Fogarty and Loreta Mansfield were to the fore with quality golf in week six of the TGIF. The leaderboard is: Margaret O’Keeffe 34, Ann Doyle 30, Joan Brennan 25, Susan Boland 24, Honoria Fogarty 22, Delia O’Donohue 20, Maureen Norton 18, Patricia Brennan 18, Loreta Mansfield 17, Helen Dunne 13.
In the men’s category Michael Doyle won week six with some tremendous golf but impressive rounds were also recorded by Nicky Walsh and Martin Mealy. Leaderboard: Nicky Walsh 41, Robert Brennan 29, Ciarán O’Neill 27, Jonathan Dowling 18, Liam Doyle 16, Gerry O’Keeffe 16, Michael Brennan 16, Gerry O’Neill 13,Andy Cleere 11, David Lynch 11.
There is an Open Week pass for the best two combined scores in rounds seven and eight.
LOTTO: There was no winner of the lotto jackpot. Numbers drawn were 7, 13, 14 and 26. The jackpot is now €3,800.

The glorious weather delivered some great scores as large crowds flocked to Callan GC for the Intermediate Scratch Cup.
The winner was Michael Connolly, who was first with a score of 79 gross.
