Michael Dermody takes Captain's prize in Castlecomer

Club Captain Seamus Brennan hosted the final round of his Captain’s prize at balmy Castlecomer GC on Saturday.

Standing on the 17th tee Michael Dermody (5) was well in contention for the spoils. After shooting 68 in the first round, he knew a special finish was needed to keep him in the hunt.
He duly delivered, scoring a birdie on the par three 17th hole and then got up and down from the greenside bunker on the par five 18th hole for another birdie. This gave him a tremendous round of 69, a two round total of 137, and a one shot victory over Anthony Holohan.
Anthony, playing off eight, had earlier posted a total of 138 with scores of 69 on both days. Karl O’Donnell had a great second round to claim the gross prize on 152. Gerry Mealy claimed third prize with a grand total of 140.

Great scoring, great camaraderie, and a beautiful golf course on which to do it was the tale as the seniors from New Ross GC held their final away outing of the season at Dungarvan GC on Monday last.
The scoring reflected the conditions and a change in format. All players took part in the club’s open singles competition, playing their own team game as well with the best three cards counting out of teams of four.
Keeping up his rich vein of form the recent winner of Harry Rheinhart’s President’s Prize, Tommy Liston, led his team to victory with a cracking final total of 112 points. Backed up by Frank Boyle, Francis Coghlan and Seamus McLaurence they had five points to spare over their nearest challengers.
On 107 points and placed second were Tommy Ryan, Kenny Irwin, Aidan Kent and Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan. Third spot went to Denis Kirwan, Billy Redmond, Larry Shannon and Jamesie Murphy with 104 points. The 101 points scored by John Browne, Michael Brennan, Tom Kent and Aidan Wallace was good enough to claim fourth prize while John Kennedy, Michael Gannon, John Joe Murray and Donie Cody finished fifth with 100 points.
Thanks went to Irene Lynch in Dungarvan GC, who facilitated the golfers by giving them a block booking on the timesheet.
Back on home turf 12 teams were out on a dry but breezy day for Thursday’s outing. While the weather helped keep the overall scores down somewhat a change of format to a champagne scramble waltz also contributed to the low scores.
The team of Tony Harford, Michael Kavanagh, Liam Glasheen and Richie Byrne emerged victorious with a final total of 89 points by virtue of a better last three holes. Ray Shannon, John Fitzpatrick, John F. Roche and Michael Long finished second with the same total (89 points). On 85 points and in third spot came Johnny Browne, Willie Byrne, Mikey Lee and Tom Kent.
There was added excitement when one senior won a nearest the pin prize with a hole in one. Willie Byrne had the rare distinction of shooting that ace on the ninth. Willie Whitty who was nearest the pin on the 11th hole.
