Kilkenny golf had serious discussion about membership

Outgoing chairman of Kilkenny golf club, Tom Sloyan, chaired the annual meeting of the Joint Clubs last Thursday. Nearly 200 turned out for the meeting.
After business was concluded discussion turned to the motion relating to Rule 14.1 and 14.3 pertaining to the extension of the age profile of the club and the effects on subscriptions; the effects for the coming years and the need to increase the membership of the Intermediate Membership category.
After a long discussion the motion was passed. Two new intermediate categories were introduced.
Intermediate members are under 30 and they qualify for a 50% reduction. Under 35’s will receive a 30% discount with members under 40 getting 20%.
Existing members may avail of Intermediate Membership, but they will have to abide by the restrictions applicable.
WASHBAY: Club Captain Mark Grant unveiled plans for the upgrade of the new Wash Bay. The plans are on display on the notice boards in the club.
LIFE MEMBERSHIP: The club decided to bestow Honarary Life Membership on Mark Power.
Doing so, the gents Captain cited the many, many achievements of Mark over the short number of years he has been playing golf.
Mark has received a scholarship to attend Wake Forest University, North Carolina where he will continue his studies and further his golfing career. He will travel to Wake Forest next August.
Honarary membership for 2019 was given to Leo Byrne for his support and commitment to the junior/juvenile members over many years as Convenor.

JD REMEMBERED: A plaque was unveiled on Saturday to the memory of the late J.D. Murphy at the practice green, beside the 9th tee box.
JD’s wife, Ann, was joined by her family Jean, Orla, Hilary and Gary and his wife and the two grandchildren. They were joined by over 50 members in recognising the work and dedication shown by J.D. to the club and in particular to the junior and juveniles.
J.D. spent many long hours coaching youngsters on the practice green over the years.
DRIVE-IN: Captains’ Mark Grant and Eithne Murphy will hold their drive-in on Sunday, February 3 (10.30am). It and will be followed with a four person team event at
A hot plate will be served after the golf. Members should place their names on the entry sheet which is on the notice board inside the bar door.
PRESENTATION: There will be a presentation of prizes this Friday in the Clubhouse. The list of dates and competitions will be:
December 15/17, 14 hole singles Stableford; December 22/23, 14 hole singles Stableford; Decembere 26, four person Open team event; December 27, 14 hole Open singles Stableford; December 30/31 and January 1, New Year’s Open team event.
COURSE NEWS: Golf will continue following the advice of independent advisors, whose recommendations were not to close the course but to allow continued golf. Holes can then be rested during the Winter season as currently happens.
However, it was also recommended that a managed programme of the course would benefit by the application of fertiliser and the re-seeding of the affected areas.
The Committee have started this programme and as a result the course will be closed for three days this week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
The course will re-open on Saturday with the weekend competition and the Saturday Cross-card.

Castlecomer GC will be as hot as an oven when the Mystery Bag cook-off competition takes over the club tomorrow (Thursday).
Starting at 8pm the evening, which has an entry fee of €10, will see chef Edward Hayden take on chef Cathal O’Dowd. There will also be a fun cookery demonstration on the night where local club members will entertain with their helpful tips and cooking skills.
SUBS: Annual subscriptions for 2019 are now due. Rates are unchanged from 2018 as agreed at the joint annual meeting.
LOTTO: There was no winner of the golf club lotto jackpot. Numbers drawn were 10, 11, 21 and 26. The jackpot is now €9,000.
SENIORS: The seniors society held their annual meeting recently. WINTER: After seven rounds of competition Team G lead the Winter League with 856 points. Team A are on 847 points, with Team B on 843 points and Team H on 840 points. The top three teams automatically qualify for the final, along with the top wildcard team from the final round.

Fourteen teams played in the seniors weekly outing, and 11 clocked up 90 points or more.
Clocking an incredible 56 points on the outward nine holes, this was the foundation of victory for Michael Kavanagh (17), Billy Redmond (19), Martin Forristal (21) and Sean O hUginn (23). They added 47 points on the back nine to finish clear winners with a 103 points.
Second with 99 points - Ray Shannon (14), Steve Travis (17), Tony Sexton (22) and Jamesie Murphy (24); 3 Tony Redmond (18), Jamesie Wallace (21), Mick Long (23) Frank Boyle (23) 97 points.
Nearest the pin prizes were won by Michael Kavanagh on the 9th hole and Willie Naddy on the 11th.
James Roche and Paul Morris from the Pro Shop sponsored the prizes for the outing.
The away outing dates are Tuesday, March 25 Gowran Park; Monday/Tuesday, April 8 and 9, Dundrum; Tuesday, April 23 Bunclody; Monday, May 13, Coolattin.
