Kilkenny competitors did well at the Leinster handball finals of the girls Cumann na mBunscoile championships in Leixlip.
Winners were under-11 singles Roisin O’Keeffe (Thomastown NS) and under-11 doubles Noelle Dowling/Orla Nolan (Muckalee NS) who qualified for the National Day in Kingscourt, Cavan.
Other participants were under-13 singles Dearbhail O’Keeffe (Thomastown NS) and under-13 doubles Edel Ní Mhaolchallain/Rebecca De Róiste(Gaelscoil Osraí).
Leinster final minor D, Brian Mahon (Clogh) and J.J. English (Goresbridge) lost to Evan/Dylan Sheridan (Meath).
All-Ireland semi-final MAS, Kilkenny’s Michael ‘Ducksie’ Walsh scored a comfortable victory over Mayo’s James Twomey.
Ladies intermediate single, Amy Corrigan (Mayo) bt Mary Phelan (Clogh); Kilkenny’s Mary Phelan fought all the
way to the finish, pushing Mayo’s Amy Corrigan to produce her best. This is Mary’s first year at intermediate and no doubt will reach the senior ranks in the near future.
Ladies junior singles, Rachel Hogan (Kilfane) bt Sinead NiAinli (Galway). Kilkenny’s Rachel Hogan faced a good Galway woman and forged ahead with a good win in the first game. Her opponent fought all the way in the second game, but Rachel won through to the All-Ireland final.
Under-21 singles, Galway (Martin Mulkerrins) w/o Kilkenny’s (Peter Funchion) due to injury; Diamond Mas B S, Joe Neary (Mayo) btt Michael Dalton (Kilfane); Kilkenny’s Michael Dalton came up against a stronger and better player in Joe Neary (Mayo).
Junior S, William Love (Clogh) bt Ciaran Burke (Mayo). In the first game William took time to settle, giving Burke a big lead. William got in to his stride, levelled and then forged ahead to win. The second game was evenly contested. The ally became unplayable due to moisture on the floor and had to be moved to a nearby ally to finish. William dug deep and scored a deserved win.
