Handball: Dawson and Clifford are high kings in Leinster

CHRIS Dawson and Graeme Clifford are the Leinster under-21 handball champions. To win the title they overcame Kells pair, Dan Breen and Ger McGrath.

In two close games the St Canice’s men edged through 21-17, 21-18 in front of a packed gallery at Talbot’s Inch. They now face Ulster opposition in the All-Ireland semi-final and they have a great chance of reaching the final.

Clogh and Kilkenny pair, Mary Phelan and Ciara Mahon travelled to Na Fianna, Dublin to play Dublin’s Lisa McKenna and Susan Clinton in the girls minor doubles Leinster final. The Kilkenny duo displayed some great serving and skills to win the game comfortably.

While the girls were in Dublin both Ciara and Mary played the Leinster minor singles semi-finals against Dublin opposition. The Kilkenny girls won, leaving the girls minor singles Leinster final between Ciara Mahon and Mary Phelan, who are both from Clogh.

In the intermediate doubles Leinster final played in Crinkle, the Kilkenny partnership of William and Daniel Love took on Meath’s Gary McConnell and Peter Reilly. Meath won the first game 21-16. The second was a great duel with both pairs competiting hard.

There were some great serving and skills displayed. William and Daniel Love won 21-20. In the third game the Kilkenny pair never got going. The game got away from them and they were beaten 21-8.

In DMAS and MAS, the famous Talbot’s Inch club has already produced two winners, Paddy Reilly and Michael ‘Ducksie’ Walsh, respectively. Both are also in contention in the doubles championships in their respective grades.

In the DMAD, Paddy will team up with Seamus Reade to take on another Talbot’s Inch duo, Jimmy Neary and Joe Savage, in what should be a pulsating contest. Both partnerships are very experienced and are well used to playing each other. The likelihood is that the outcome will probably go all the way to the last ace.

In MAD, ‘Ducksie’ will have D.J. Carey by his side as they renew acquaintances with Meath’s Tom Sheridan and partner in what should be another close contest.

It’s an all Kilkenny final in under-21 singles with Keith Bourke taking on Ger McGrath in Muillnavat. Ger will be looking to make up for last weekend’s defeat in the doubles. Keith has been in fine form and easily defeated Eoghan Hennessy in the semi-final.

There will be two different styles on show. Ger has a strong kill shot game while Keith never gives up on any ball with his great fitness levels. It should be an interesting encounter, which is hard to call.
