There was an excellent crowd in attendance for the opening round of the Kilford Arms Hotel McCalmont Cup a1 stake at Kilkenny greyhound track. The night also featured a benefit meeting for the Irish Kidney Association.
The fastest time was posted by the Karol Ramsbottom trained Figaruso (Ballymac Ruso-Droopys Caoimhe) in the second heat of the ’Cup. Figaruso took a flyer from trap 2 and led the pack by two lengths into the first.
Two lengths up on Mahogany Boy at the second, Figaruso looked vulnerable when her lead was halved into the third bend. However, Jerry Daly’s bitch found plenty for pressure and stayed away to defeat the running on Princess Gael by two and a half lengths in 29.11. The win completed a double for trainer Karol Ramsbottom.
The Pat Buckley trained Dragon Shield was the first winner in the stake for 2013. After a level start, Dragon Shield led up from trap 1 before moving two lengths clear of High St Kingo at the second bend.
Dragon Shield (Cabra Cool-Dragon Crash) ran the back straight to double his advantage and was always holding the challenge of Droopys Comedian by four lengths in a time of 29.22.
James Hayden and Michael Comerford sent out Fiancee Alsation to claim the second heat. The race was even early doors before Fiancée Alsation asserted to lead into the turn. The leader was excellent between the bend and quickly built up a four length lead over the chasing pack.
The lead was still four lengths at the third bend as Canford Rules set about giving chase. It would be a chase in vain as
Fiancee Alsation (Crash-Disco Classic) held on by two lengths in 29.13.
Stunning Buddy and Skywalker Silk battled it out into the first bend of the fourth heat. The latter was clipped and sent flying. Stunning Buddy was left four lengths clear at the second with Garryglass Marco now in pursuit.
Stunning buddy added a further length to his lead into the third but tired late on. Garryglass Marco closed the gap but Stunning Buddy (Flying Penske-Stunning Wilma) had enough done to win by two lengths in 29.49.
There was not much in it from traps in the fifth heat before Danmar Benny led to the bend with Piercestown Liam on his outer. The pair were level out of the second before Danmar Benny took a length lead into the third.
Piercestown Liam put pay to his chances by coming very wide off the last. Danmar Benny faded as the field closed up nearing the line. In the end, Danmar Benny (Hades Rocket-Danmar Pudsy) held on by a short head in 29.46.
The last heat saw Run Samson Run and Buddy Minor go to the bend together. The pair were level at the second where unfortunately Buddy Minor went lame. This left Run Samson Run clear and the smart son of Hondo Black and Emporio Star took full advantage.
Run Samson Run kept on motoring and won easily from Stunning Harvey. The winning distance was eight and a half lengths in 29.17.
The opening a5 525 was dominated by Triangle Archie. The winner was quickly into stride and despite easing across the track a little, he was never in danger. Showing a nice touch of early dash Triangle Archie was six lengths clear at the second bend.
Blue Ballydaniel chased the leader all the way home and though she tried hard, she never looked like challenging the all the
winner. Triangle Archie (Ace Hi Ruble-Triangle Beyonce) scored by six lengths in a time of 29.40.
Stayed on well
Garryglass Sheba led up in the a3 525 and pushed on to lead Condor Star by two lengths at the second bend. The lead was down to a length by the third but that was as close as Condor Star got. The Karol Ramsbottom trained Garryglass Sheba (Hometown Boy Nga-Felltop Flyer) stayed on well to score by three and a half lengths in 29.44.

It was Flomur Antics who was now in pursuit of the leader. He looked a real danger but Tinahue Summer (Rumble Impact-Westgate Rosie) found plenty and saw it out by three lengths in 29.23.
