TAG rugby is back in Kilkenny big time for 2011. There are 28 teams competing in this social league held in Kilkenny rugby club every Thursday evening.
This tag rugby event is now in its fifth year and has growing numbers each year. This year there are approximately 350 people playing. There are two rounds of matches each Thursday (6.50 and 7.40pm).
There are a number of teams who enter each year, plus there are some new teams who have taken up tag this season. Team names vary from companies who enter, like State Street, Langton’s, O’Neill Foley, PWC, Veolia, O’Brien surveyors, Mugshot Café, Left Bank and Sonix entertainment, to random names like Artful Dodgers (musical society), Macra, Try Treats (Cramers grove ice cream), Blue Lights and the bizarre like Sons of Pitches, Inbetweeners, Non educated delinquents, Rag Tags, Shake and Bake, Run Fat Boy Run, Little Hitler’s, Dizzy Rascals, Okay – we wont intimidate, AB Reserves, Zooper Doopers, Tag it like its hot, Hardly Athletic RFC, and Indecisive.
Matches started on May 12 and will continue in Kilkenny rugby club each Thursday until early July. There will be two Friday night games, June 10 and on the finals night in early July.
There will also be a barbecue after the matches on Friday. The presentations of awards will be in The Set Theatre on finals night
While there are some rugby players, male and female, playing the majority of players have never played rugby before. All enjoy the social side of this league run by Kilkenny rugby club. All the referees and organisers are rugby club members, who run a very successful social fun league.
Langtons, who sponsor Tag Rugby each year, provide food after each match for the players and the bar is open afterwards for teams and players to analyse their matches and plan for the following week.
