The death has been announced of former Kilkenny hurling star Johnny McGovern.
McGovern won five Leinster titles and two All-Ireland crowns during his time as a player with the Cats but it's his effect at club level that is so noteworthy.
During a 21 year spell, the gifted defender won 11 Kilkenny senior hurling titles with Bennettsbridge.
McGovern died peacefully at his home in Bennettsbridge and was the beloved husband of Eileen and much loved father of Niall, sadly missed by his wife and son, sisters Peggy and Kathleen (Canada), daughter-in-law Barbara, grandsons Ruairi and Donagh, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours, friends and fellow GAA members.
He will be reposing in Johnston's Funeral Home, Johns Green, Kilkenny on Saturday from 4.30pm with Funeral Prayers at 6pm followed by removal to St. Bennett's Church, Bennettsbridge. Funeral Mass on Sunday at 12 noon. Interment afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
