'Someone will be killed' - Dangerous Kilkenny road put under the microscope

Road safety is back to the fore on the political agenda with one councillor highlighting a black spot in North Kilkenny.

Independent Cllr Maurice Shortall has called on Kilkenny County Council to engage with the TII to address the constant road safety issue on the N78 at Coolbawn in Castlecomer.

Just over a month ago, gardaí and emergency services responded to a traffic collision involving a van and a car that occurred on that road.

Three people, a man aged in his 40s and two male juveniles, were conveyed to St Luke’s General Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

"There’s been numerous crashes there over the last number of years and I want us to be pro-active rather than reactive as a local electoral area," he told councillors at the most recent sitting of the Castlecomer Municipal District.

Speaking at the monthly meeting, Cllr Shortall argued that urgent action is needed on that stretch of road, stating, "someone will be killed there."

"Anti-slip surfacing similar to what was carried out near the Cave Bar last week would be a start," Cllr Shortall subsequently told the Kilkenny People.

Meanwhile, last week proved to be a negative one on County Kilkenny roads.

Two people were taken to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening following a crash between the Lime Tree and Ballymack Cross on the N76 outside Callan.

Elsewhere, gardaí received a report of a two-vehicle collision at Ballymack, Cuffesgrange. The collision, which involved a car and a van. Both drivers were brought to St Luke’s General Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Meanwhile, there was a further collision on the College Road involving a car and a bicycle on Saturday with no injuries reported.
