The recently-installed static speed camera on a stretch of the N25 in South Kilkenny continues to generate strong discussion among councillors, following a recent change in the speed limit prompted by public outcry.

Cllr Fidelis Doherty said members should “maybe get a report on numbers and stats and how that’s going,” noting significant public interest in how the system is performing.

Cllr Pat Dunphy said there was a ‘huge amount getting caught with that new speed camera’, reflecting concerns being relayed locally since enforcement began.

Responding, area engineer John Tennyson explained that variable message signs are in place to provide advance notice to motorists.

“There’s variable message signs to give prior warning,” he said. “From what we’re hearing the levels of fines, they’re being left up there.”

He added that the camera is ‘doing the job’ and expressed hope that it is ‘hopefully saving lives’.
