There was great fanfare in Kilkenny on Saturday as Yulefest officially got under way with the turning on of the Christmas lights and the arrival of Santa and Mrs Claus.

It was great to see such a fantastic turnout, with people well and truly getting into the festive swing of things. There will be plenty of excitement over the coming weeks — lots of shopping, indulging, gift giving and excitement, new memories created, old traditions celebrated. It’s that time of year.

We must remember, however, that Christmas is not fun for everyone, and some people do not look forward to this time of year. It can be lonely and difficult, cold and financially taxing.

And while there are valid criticisms over things like commercialisation and packaging waste, one thing that is always in evidence at this time of year is people’s willingness to help others. Generosity and kindness comes to the fore, and people often show their best selves.

Take for example, the annual Shoebox Appeal. Last year, 6,100 gift wrapped shoeboxes went from Kilkenny to Malawi, all to help needy children. This year will hopefully see a similar outpouring of charity.

The Lions Club is extremely busy this time of year, with numerous fundraisers all aiming to help out worthy local causes. The annual Christmas concert, hamper appeal, and auction all see support from the public and local businesses.

There are deeply personal acts of support also. A GoFundMe recently launched to help with the cost of a local teenager’s medical treatment has seen an outpouring of kindness. Maria Hogan has been hit with a life-changing medical diagnosis, and her family has been forced to travel abroad to try and treat the rare condition.

With the costs of urgent surgery, travel, and the recovery, it’s well beyond what most people could manage. While there is a long way to go to reach their target, the family say they are bowled over by the support shown to them so far.
