Editorial: Kilkenny left standing on the platform once again

Kilkenny appears to have been once again left standing on the platform judging by the recently published Rail Project Prioritisation Strategy.

The Strategy outlines how to best sequence and optimise the recommendations of the All-Island Strategic Rail Review, which was launched following public consultation in July 2024.

Unfortunately for rail users in Kilkenny, it reads like another chapter in a long-running story of neglect of our rail network.
The Government says it believes the transformation of our rail network will help address regional imbalance and encourage a shift towards greater use of sustainable transport. We are constantly hearing about the need to shift people from cars to public transport, to meet climate targets, reduce congestion and support balanced regional development.

One of the most basic things that should be included is addressing the problem that the platform at MacDonagh Train Station is too short. Because the station cannot accommodate longer trains, only a limited number of carriages can stop there.

The result is predictable and unacceptable: chronic overcrowding, passengers standing for long journeys, and commuters left behind on busy services. This is not a sudden problem caused by unexpected demand. It has been evident for years, repeatedly raised by passengers and public representatives alike.

It also looks like the Government has quietly dropped plans to reopen the Waterford–Wexford rail line — what should be a priority for the region. Concerns have been raised after the project failed to appear in this new government plan, despite its inclusion in the All-Ireland Strategic Rail Review.

It’s a big blow, particularly when commuters are struggling with an over-capacity rail network.

When is the Government going to get serious about funding and promoting our rail network?
