Temperatures hit near -9°C overnight as Kilkenny named Ireland's coldest area

Various parts of the country experienced freezing temperatures this Thursday morning.

Thomastown, Co Kilkenny has been named by Carlow Weather as the area with the coldest temperature overnight, having hit a low -8.6°C.

Across the country, the effects of the cold front were felt, with a few wintry showers reported in the North and West.

According to Met Éireann, in Kilkenny this Thursday, locals can expect it to be very cold today with frost, ice, and fog slow to clear, lingering in some spots through the day. A dry and sunny day overall. Highest temperatures of just 1 to 3 degrees in a light northwest breeze.

Tonight will be largely dry and very cold with widespread sharp to severe frost, icy stretches, and the possibility of some fog. Lowest temperatures of -4 and -2 degrees with light west or variable breezes.
