Popular weather forecaster Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather has warned followers that there is a risk of freezing rain later today, which can lead to 'absolutely treacherous conditions'.
"Freezing rain is very rare in Ireland, it is when rain falls due to milder air above but meets cold air at surface and freezes on contact," the forecaster said.
The resulting ice, called glaze ice, can accumulate to a thickness of several centimeters and cover all exposed surfaces.
Met Éireann have also warned that some of the showers later today and into tonight 'will be of freezing rain'.
Patches of freezing fog will also lead to hazardous driving conditions in places.
