Shrughawadda Players will present their new production of ‘The Year of the Hiker’ by John B Keane in St Eoghan’s Centre in Kilmoganny from February 23 to 26 at 8.15pm nightly.
‘The Year of the Hiker’ is one of Keane’s most poignant plays. Written over 40 years ago it has been produced almost every year by different drama groups around Ireland.
It tells the story of Michael Lacey, known as ‘the Hiker’ for his wandering which he spent his life doing. He left his family home one day and didn’t return for twenty years, abandoning his wife and small children.
There is a sense of yearning and regret for lost love throughout the play.He suddenly returns home on a very important day in his familys’ life. There is a mixture of comedy and sadness in this play and promises to be a very enjoyable performance.
The Shrughawadda Players welcome new players this year. Muiris Wallace, Olivia Dunne and Bobby Murray who has been in Many Young Men of Twenty. Of course the usual suspects are on board Willie Kearney, Biddy Hawe, Marie Kelly and of course Gerry Carroll (Winnie).
Admission is €12 and tickets can be purchased at www.gr8events.ie/shrughawaddaplayers23 and at Pete’s Shop in Kilmoganny.
The play is directed by Alycia Kearney. Backstage and front of house are Jackie Kenneally and Caroline Doran and stage builders and carpenters Willie, William and Anthony Kearney.Art and set design etc Stephen Gilmore and Lisa Kearney.
