A new community-led gallery and performance space will open its doors to the people of Kilkenny this weekend.
Over two days, May 26th and 27th, a series of free events and drop-in activities will take place in The Powerhouse, a new community-led gallery and performance space on Mill Lane in Callan.
Situated in the handsome old mill building overlooking the Abbey Meadow beside KCAT Arts Centre and Keogh’s bakery, The Powerhouse name acknowledges the building's historic significance in the town of Callan as a locally owned hydro-electric generating station that provided power to businesses and public street lighting in the early 20th Century.
This Friday and Saturday the public are invited to visit The Powerhouse to participate in different activities being proposed by local arts, cultural and community groups, including drama warm-up games, collaborative painting, expressive dance, play reading, stone carving, and screenprinting.
There will also be talks about Callan’s heritage and a chance for members of the public, young and old, to suggest ways this building can be used to enhance the lives of people living in and around Callan.

The Powerhouse is a Trasna Productions initiative, which Kilkenny LEADER Partnership, Kilkenny County Council and Clann Credo - Community Loan Finance have generously funded. The Open House weekend programme of events is funded by the Arts Council, through the Capacity Building Support Scheme, which supports the development of a short to medium-term plan for the building.
