Kilkenny Potters Market is a two-day free family friendly event in the heart of Kilkenny City.
Taking place on the Parade in Kilkenny City over the August Bank Holiday Weekend (Sunday and Monday from 10am to 6pm).
The Kilkenny Potters Market showcases the work of 21 potters and ceramicists from all over the country, celebrating some of the best contemporary ceramics made in Ireland, representing a wide variety of styles, making techniques and ceramic materials used.
The market returns after a brief break from last year and is a fantastic opportunity to meet the makers, learn about their processes, support local artists and purchase a unique handmade piece of Irish ceramics.
In 2021, Kilkenny was designated a World Craft Council Craft City and Region, one of only five regions to achieve this recognition in Europe.
This prestigious internationally recognised award highlights the diverse skill and knowledge of craftspeople here in Kilkenny.
Many featured artists are local to Kilkenny, such as event organisers Lydia Smith and Sonja Guenther, both living and working in Thomastown.
“Kilkenny is a real magnet for craftspeople,” said Lydia, speaking on the importance of the market to potters. “It’s an inspiring place to live and that’s really shown in the quality and variety of work.
“We wanted to make sure that the market went ahead this year as it’s always a fantastic atmosphere. We feel it’s a great place to connect with customers, tell the story behind your pottery and get feedback on your work.
“Many of the potters at this year's market are established names that have attended the market before,” she added.
“We will also have a few people newer to the scene and we’re delighted to be able to bring new talent to the public eye.”
This event is part of Alternative Kilkenny Arts Fringe festival, a festival taking place across Kilkenny from August 4 to 20.
The market is also supported by August Craft Month, an initiative bringing together summer craft events across the island of Ireland through a partnership of Design & Crafts Council Ireland, Craft NI and Cork Craft & Design.
