Kilkenny native and fitness coach Denise Murphy is an ambassador for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, and will lead her local Kilkenny Memory Walk on Sunday, September 22.
Denise will be walking in memory of her late father, Michael, who sadly passed away last year at just 66 and lived with dementia for the last 10 years of his life. The Kilkenny Memory Walk takes place at Kilkenny Castle Park on Sunday, September 22 and starts at 11am, meeting at Switzers Gate on Castle Road.

Michael was formally diagnosed with Early Onset Dementia in 2013 after showing signs of dementia for three years. Denise is an only child and supported her mum, who was Michael’s carer. Denise and her mum are thankful for the support of The Alzheimer Society of Ireland where Michael attended the Kilkenny Day Centre most weekdays.

“Dad loved going to The Alzheimer’s day centre in Kilkenny where he participated in music and singing sessions, which he really loved. Music was his passion and was a way to connect with him even on the most difficult of days," Denise said.

Denise is urging everyone to get behind this year’s Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, supported by Payzone, on Sunday, September 22nd to help raise awareness and funds to help those living with dementia and particularly those living with early onset dementia in Ireland.
Register online now at www.memorywalk.ie to make and share memories on Sunday, September 22 at a location near you. You will receive an Alzheimer’s Memory Walk Participant Pack including your t-shirt and a special pack of Forget Me Not flower seeds to sow at home to help create an annual memory each time the flowers bloom. Adult registration costs €20 and a child’s pack is €5.

Memory Walk honours, remembers, and celebrates the 64,000 people in Ireland living with dementia, along with their families and carers. It also cherishes the memory of those who are no longer with us. In 2023, 3,500 walkers participated in Memory Walk and raised over €120,000 which helped fund vital services for people with dementia, including Daycare, Daycare at Home, Family Carer Training, Social Clubs, Cafés, and a National Helpline.
