Over 50 different events to choose from in County Kilkenny for Heritage Week

An exciting programme of over 50 events is planned to celebrate National Heritage Week in Kilkenny, which will take place from August 17-25.

National Heritage Week is a Heritage Council initiative held annually in partnership with local authority Heritage Officers. The week invites people to foster a deeper appreciation for the heritage that shapes identities and communities, ensuring its preservation for future generations. It brings together volunteers, community groups and heritage enthusiasts to share their experience, knowledge, culture and practices through a variety of public events nationwide, the majority of which are free to attend.

This year’s theme of Connections, Routes and Networks invites everyone to delve into the various ways they are connected.

Physical routes, like roads and rivers, show the history of communities through trade, exploration, and migration. Beyond these visible paths, cultural and natural heritage also weaves a rich tapestry of connections that have been passed down through generations. Sporting traditions, family ties, and shared pastimes all contribute to this social network. Migratory birds and native species create natural networks that stretch across continents.

"We are immensely proud of our rich heritage in County Kilkenny and the stewards of that heritage across the county who work tirelessly to protect it and promote it all year round and I encourage everyone to get out and about to explore all Kilkenny’s Heritage has to offer on Heritage Week," said Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council Michael McCarthy.

Through initiatives like digitisation projects and online resources, heritage is now more accessible than ever, allowing us to explore and connect with our roots in new and innovative ways. Projects like digital archives and online resources make it easier for people to learn about their shared histories. Many of these initiatives will be on display across the county during the week in programme which includes walks, workshops, lectures, demonstrations, exhibitions, performances. All events are free of charge.

Kilkenny County Council Heritage Officer, Regina Fitzpatrick said: "Heritage Week is a wonderful opportunity to explore our County and to see many sites and places that are not always open to the public or to see them with a guide to shed new light. This year there are over 50 different events to choose from in County Kilkenny which is a huge credit to the communities, owners and organisations welcoming you to explore their place."

Each year, the Heritage Council's National Heritage Awards celebrate the most engaging projects and events organised by National Heritage Week project organisers.  Members of the public are invited to help us showcase those that contribute to highlighting our heritage, the people who help mould and encourage future generations to be custodians of our heritage.
