Minister of State Malcolm Noonan will be among the guests at a special event entitled ‘In Praise of Philanthropy’ as part of National Heritage Week.

The illustrated talk on the stained glass in St Aidan’s Church of Ireland, Kilmanagh will take place in the Kilmanagh church on Sunday, August 18 at 3pm. It will pay tribute to the late George Sherwood, through whose good offices the stained glass in St Aidan’s, Kilmanagh was rescued, restored and installed there 25 years ago.

Harry Meyer will give the talk on this important stained glass under the headings: Iconography, Studios who created the works and Philanthropy, ie those who paid for it all. The guests attending include Minister of State Malcolm Noonan, Regina Fitzpatrick (Heritage Officer Kilkenny County Council), Virginia Teehan (CEO of the Heritage Council) and Cllr Joe Sheridan, whose father’s studio did the restoration work and installations. Valerie O’Connor, niece of George Sherwood will read a poem.

Mr Carpendale has composed two new pieces for harp to mark the occasion: Planxty George Sherwood and St Aidan. Included in Ursula’s songs is The Last Rose of Summer composed in 1813 by Thomas Moore in Jenkinstown Castle, Kilkenny.
All are welcome to attend, and a wine and cheese reception will follow afterwards.
