The Museum of the Moon by Luke Jerram
St Canice’s Cathedral and Round Tower is set to unveil the Museum of the Moon, a breath-taking installation by artist Luke Jerram, on March 10, 2025, for an exclusive three-week exhibit.
The Dean and Chapter have announced an open call for submissions from artists, community groups, and performers to present lunar-themed events to accompany the three-week exhibition.
The Museum of the Moon, a large-scale installation, will dominate the cathedral, dramatically suspended three metres from the ground above head height. The luminous artwork features detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface.
Those interested in participating in the spectacle can submit proposals for a moonlit concert, dining experience, theatre, spoken word, or dance performance inspired by our closest celestial neighbour. Contact the St Canice’s Cathedral events team to learn more.
The exhibition and accompanying events are part of an ongoing initiative to enhance the visitor experience at St Canice's Cathedral & Round Tower, Kilkenny's top visitor attraction after Kilkenny Castle. It welcomed 54,000 visitors last year.
A key attraction in Ireland’s Ancient East, the Cathedral is set to enhance domestic tourism, and contribute to Kilkenny's overall visitor experience with an exciting lunar programme in March.
Following the success of the Red Book of Ossory exhibit launched in July, the cathedral will now strengthen its offer with extraordinary events unveiling the mysteries of the moon.
The Very Reverend Stephen Farrell, Dean of Ossory, explains,
“We are delighted to host the Museum of the Moon at St Canice’s Cathedral. We warmly encourage artists, groups, and performers to share their ideas to present a lunar-themed performance or event to accompany the exhibition. We look forward to your ideas for a diverse and memorable day or night-time experience to inspire children and adults through music, performance, dance, wellness, theatre, spoken word, lectures, and more.”
