The Irish Chamber Orchestra makes its much-anticipated return to the Kilkenny Arts Festival on Friday, August 15 at 7.30pm at St Canice’s Cathedral.
Night Moves promises a night to remember, a celebration of endings and beginnings. It is a poignant evening as we bid a heartfelt farewell to Katherine Hunka, who takes her final bow as leader of the ICO after more than two decades of extraordinary leadership.

This special performance marks Henning Kraggerud’s debut as Artistic Partner of the Irish Chamber Orchestra, ushering in a bold new era of musical discovery that will unfold over the next three years. A deeply emotive and imaginative performer, Henning brings a unique voice to the orchestra, one that radiates warmth, compassion, and boundless creativity.

ICO’s offering is for the night-thinkers and dreamers, for those who listen with their hearts. Be transported into a rich, atmospheric world forged by composers who captured the fleeting moments of nights filled with passion and peace.
Journey under the stars with Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No 3, a vibrant glimpse into the Baroque world. Be seduced by the quiet glow of Schoenberg’s Notturno, rich with atmospheric hues. Amy Beach’s Romance serenades with its warmth and tenderness, leading into Barber’s Adagio for Strings, a heart-wrenching expression of deep yearning.
Look to the heavens with Kraggerud’s Equinox and Lili Boulanger’s Nocturne, shimmering nightscapes that spark the imagination. Mahler’s Adagietto will mesmerise as the magic of longing nights fading into dawn, before Bach’s Violin Concerto in A minor brings you full circle to a peaceful renewal.
